Trans-Tasman Vintage Cricket Carnival, Gold Coast, Queensland   May 2011

Vintage Cricket Teams and “Winter” Cricket

A group of Vintage Cricket teams took part in a Vintage Cricket Carnival in Gold Coast, Queensland late in May. The 3rd Trans-Tasman Vintage Cricket Carnival allowed teams from colder climes to play cricket in what Queenslanders call Autumn. At a time when most Australian and New Zealand teams have packed away their gear the wonderful Gold Coast hosted a cricket tournament.

Ten teams took part:

Auckland University Fingletoads, New Zealand

Auckland Dominators, New Zealand

Australian Cricket Society, Victoria

Queensland Cricketers Club

Bundaberg Veterans, Queensland

Newcastle Lords Taverners, New South Wales

Wheatons Armidale, New South Wales

Wheatons Northern New South Wales

Gold Coast Cricket Society

Coomera-Hope Island Veterans

Games were played on a mix of artificial and turf pitches at dedicated cricket grounds and hosted by local clubs. Queensland cricket lovers are extremely fortunate to live in a region where cricket can be played all year round, where many cricket grounds are not dominated by winter sports and where cricket has such a dedicated group of supporters, players and umpires. Every game had official umpires who entered into the spirit of the Carnival and who publicly acknowledged their enjoyment of the spirit and manner in which games were played.

The fun and friendship off the field was matched by the competition and great attitude on the field. All teams and players recognise the true spirit of the great game. The Trans-Tasman rivalry was as always good-natured and friendly-plenty of banter on and off the field and always the after match mixing and mingling was a feature of the Carnival. Teams enjoyed themselves and in most cases committed to getting together again soon at the next Vintage Cricket Carnival. Trans-Tasman relationships on the Vintage Cricket Carnival front at least are live, well and enjoyable.

“As Chairman of the Cricket gold Coast Umpires Association, I would like to thank you and the organising Committee for inviting my team of Umpires to participate in the recent Vintage Cricket Carnival on the Gold Coast. Our Umpires had a great time and have asked me to pass on to you that all teams participated in the real spirit of Cricket.

Could you also thank your members for allowing us as a group, to stage a raffle, at your prestigious dinner at the Radisson which I had the pleasure of attending enabling our team to raise funds for the coming season. You can be assured that the proceeds of the night will be used for training new cricket umpires into our ranks, in particular in the Junior competitions.

One again Diane it was great to catch up with you and I hope we can meet again as a team in New Zealand.

Yours in the game of Cricket,

Les Garraway

Chairman Cricket Gold Coast Umpires Association”

The weather was good though some rain curtailed play early on the 1st day, a bit of wind cooled down the 2nd day and the 3rd game was played in conditions that would have been considered brilliant in most summers throughout Australia and New Zealand.

A couple of great functions with speakers at the Finale Dinner, ex Queensland wicket-keeper, Peter Anderson assisted by former Australian leg-spin bowler, Bob Holland who both struck a note with the audience. Thank goodness that some of the old-fashioned values of the game are still recognised and enjoyed by former top players.

Not a bad way to spend a week away from early winter sports, winter conditions and weather and a group of us even managed to watch an AFL game at the brand new Gold Coast Suns home stadium-and the local team managed to fade after a promising start and suffer a heavy defeat-sounds a bit familiar.

Sincere thanks to all concerned:

The Gold Coast Cricket Association

Gold Coast Cricket Umpires Association

The host clubs and their dedicated groundsmen

The Surfers and Rowers Club, hosts of the Opening Function

The Radisson Resort who accommodated a number of the teams and hosted the Finale Dinner

Neville Taylor, local Vintage Cricket liaison and  management

Kevin Pike, Vintage Cricket Representative in Australia and overseer of the Carnival arrangements.
