Barry Richards, greeted the news with delight and has committed to promoting the Carnival in his home country. “Great news and I know that the locals will go out of their way to ensure a true Vintage Cricket experience in Cape Town” said Barry who hopes to attend the Carnival.
The Cape Town Vintage Cricket Carnival is very fortunate to have the active support and encouragement of one of the greatest cricketers of all time, Barry Richards. Indeed it was Barry’s encouragement and enthusiasm that swayed the decision to select Cape Town to be the venue for the fifth World Vintage Cricket Carnival. An elegant right handed batsman, his characteristic high backlift, full flow of the bat an almost distracted air, made him instantly recognisable to followers of the game in three countries. The banning of South Africa from Test cricket left Richards with a paltry four tests and many commentators and fans lamenting what might have been.
After his retirement as a player Barry became involved in cricket administration as Director of Cricket for Natal. He moved to Australia with his family in 1988 to coach the South Australian Sheffield Shield team who reached the Shield Final that year. Barry then moved to Queensland as Chief Executive Officer in 1989 and in his eight years at the helm Queensland became a leader in all aspects of cricket in Australia.
Barry served as the Patron of the 2nd World Vintage Cricket Carnival in Perth, Western Australia in 2005 and gladly accepted the position of President of the Vintage Cricket Movement subsequent to the Carnival. Barry remains an enthusiastic supporter of Vintage Cricket and its objectives and has been a strong advocate for a Carnival to be staged in Cape Town.
